Father, why hast thou forsaken me?
The soft strains of an orchestra float through the church and the clear voice of the soloist begins to sing. Roman soldiers walk slowly into sight and stand, staring at the audience. The music swells and a full choir bursts into song. Christ is dragged before Pilate and an angry mob clamors for his death.
The Seven Last Words of Christ is more than a theatrical performance; it is a deep, profound, Lenten event in which you can experience the sufferings of Christ in his Passion. The performance is a unique blend of acting and music: The actors never speak, as the choir is the voice and the narration for the sorrowful scenes.
The Seven Last Words of Christ was originally a musical piece written by Theodore Dubois as a Lenten meditation. In 2008, Simonetta Pacek, a Catholic singer/songwriter, took Dubois' work and choreographed a Passion play to be acted by the Little Flowers Catholic Dance and Theatre Troupe. Since 2008, The Seven Last Words of Christ has been performed many times to large, enthusiastic crowds and was used by Auxilliary Bishop Kaffer of the Joliet Diocese as his "Lenten meditation".
Join us in 2012 as we again perform this moving account of Christ's Passion and death.
